An eighth degree blackbelt, Master Gates operates a professional martial arts training center in Pennsylvania, which was featured in Blackbelt Magazine. Master Gates is the successful event promoter for the Pennsylvania Open Championships, the Tri- State Internationals, and The Keystone International Martial Arts Championships. He can also be seen officiating at the Battle of Baltimore World Championships and the Maryland Open National Championships with Master John Burdyck. Some of Master Gates’ recognized guests have been Joe Lewis, three-time UFC Champion, Dan "The Beast" Severn, World Karate Champion, author, and film star Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, film and television star Jeff Speakman, "The Perfect Weapon," Miss Pennsylvania Marla Wynne, PKA Referee and film and television star Jay T Will, and film and television star Ho Sung Pak, who plays the Ninja Turtle Raphael. The Keystone Internationals have also been featured in the internationally-renowned Karate Illustrated Magazine.

Master Gates has been training in the martial arts for more than 27 years in all various styles of Martial Arts, Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Soo, Bahk Do, Jui Jitsu, Kenpo, and many Chinese Kung Fu Systems as well as Full-Contact Kickboxing.

He is an active board member on several levels in the martial arts community. He has most recently been appointed to the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Referees Association and the International Referees Commission, The Karate World Ratings Systems, and is a board member of N.O.R.M.A.L. (National Organization of Registered Martial Artists League).

Master Brian Gates is also the founder of the International Federation of Mixed Martial Arts. The IFMMA is an organization where all martial arts students, instructors, and schools may unite, become strong, and certify in their perspective arts.
